Trick or Treat?

It occurred to me tonight on Halloween that the practice of immigration law is a day-to-day form of trick-or-treating. You wear a suit and tie, which renders you instantly recognizable in waiting rooms and, as such, qualifies as a generic costume. You dare go into monstrous government buildings where all kinds of scary and unpleasant things have been known to happen to people. You ask for immigration benefits for clients in a way that, albeit remotely, suggests that you won’t take no for an answer. And after everything has been said and done, the end result may seem sweet, sour or bitter as candy.
